Summary |
Two men, Ed and Kruso, are part of a group of dropouts who run the pub "Zum Klausner" on Hiddensee. In GDR times, the island on the Baltic attracts a motley crew of alternative thinkers, intellectuals, artists, and dissidents, becoming an anchor for those in the utopian search for freedom and a new perspective on life. Against the island's magical scenic backdrop, individual human destinies and the larger transformations of a political system crystallize into the story of a brotherly friendship, with a vision bolder than any political system can allow. As ever more people start turning their backs on East Germany in the summer of 1989, the "Klausner" starts to empty out as well, until in the end the sheltering ark becomes a "sinking ship," with only Kruso and Ed remaining aboard. |
