Pringle Rose is grief stricken after the death of her parents in a terrible carriage accident. Uncle Edward and Aunt Adeline move in to care for Pringle and her brother, Gideon, but they make life miserable for both children. When Pringle realizes that her aunt plans to send Gideon away, the children escape on a train headed toward Chicago. Gwen Pritchard, a kind woman they meet on the train, offers them a place to stay. Pringle’s hopes for a new life are threatened by suspicions about the deaths of her parents, and the outbreak of the devastating Chicago Fire finds her and Gideon running for their lives.
