By all "counts," twelve-year old Willow Chance should not have fit in anywhere. The adopted mixed-race genius stood far apart from her classmates, as she could speak many foreign languages, memorize medical textbooks, obsess over the number 7, and grow fruits and vegetables like a farmer. Willow's loving mother and father, however, accepted her idiosyncrasies and provided a safe haven for her. This all changed when her parents were both killed in an auto accident. In painful fits and starts, Willow found support and love in the most unexpected places, and changed those people for the better as well. This is a readable, character-driver story of community and acceptance. Grades 4 and up. (cje)
