SRP 2012 REVIEW: A sweeping tale of Zarite, the concubine of a slavemaster The story begins in Haiti and ends up in New Orleans in the late 1800s. The story takes you with Zarite though her life and actual historical events such as the slave rebellion in Haiti. As with all of her novels, Allende's characters are round and full- you feel their experiences, but you see the world through the eyes of a strong woman who will not simply accept her place in life, but struggles to be more. It is an amazing journey through a world full of inequality and challenges, which accurately reflect the time. Allende again delivers an amazing tapestry of a story with an ending that the reader will feel beautifully satisfied
