| Summary |
Twelve-year-old Charlie O'Leary signs aboard the USS Varuna as it steams its way towards the mouth of the Mississippi River to fight the Confederate Navy. Charlie is short enough, and swift enough, to race through the crowded ship and fetch gunpowder for the big guns on deck. The cannons boom like thunder.
