Summary "Marion Donnell, stenographer to Hector Ferguson, Chicago corporation lawyer, elopes with Jack Merrick, scion of a wealthy family; and in the midst of their honeymoon, Jack's father induces him to annul the marriage and arrange a proper society wedding, causing the enraged Marion to leave him. Over a year later she lives in a tenement with her child and returns to the law office. Suffering a breakdown as a result of her financial straits, she is aided by her employer, who furnishes her with a luxury apartment. When Ferguson dies, he bequeaths Marion half a million dollars, and to protect her child, she sends for Jack, who is married to an invalid; but Merrick, Sr., realizing that there is a male heir by his son's first wife, threatens to acquire custody of the child. She surrenders him willingly, however, when Jack's wife offers to divorce him. Later, after the wife's death, Marion and Jack are reconciled"--AFI catalog, 1921-1930.
