Private eye V.I. Warshawski, inspecting an empty house as part of a routine case, discovers an intruder and a forty-year-old corpse. Each of these lead her in turn to a McCarthy-era scandal and a modern-era terrorist investigation, both of which pit her against adversaries who will do anything to keep their secrets buried.
