SRP 2012 REVIEW: Really loved the story based on Ms. Walls childhood and her experiences growing up in a dysfunctional family with poverty, addiction, and mental health issues. It is a testimony to the human spirit and an inspirational story.

SRP 2011 REVIEW: It's an excellent, searing autobiography recounting a childhood of abject poverty, wonderful experiences in the California desert, appalling life in West Virgina mountain town, and escape to New York.

SRP 2011 REVIEW: This book was pretty good. The perspective which it was told in was really great because of the bond she had with her father. It was a story of Jeannette's life, so I thought the beginning went slowly, but she was just retelling all that happened in her life. The ending was a happy ending and the book was overall a good story about the struggles this family went through.

SRP 2011 REVIEW: The Book was good hard to put down because you just could not believe that this is a true story and that anyone would choose to live this way and treat their children this way. The struggles of the children and how it affects their life were hard and it kept getting worse. Had to finish book to make sure they were ok.

SRP 2010 REVIEWS (9): #1) Could not put it down-excellently written, moving, true story. #2) This is a heart-wrenchingly poignant memoir of a woman who was raised in the most dysfunctional but fascinating family. She endures unbelievable poverty and instability with tragic but creative, intelligent parents who could never find their place in this world. I couldn't put it down and highly recommend. #3) Having already listened to Ms. Walls' latest novel on CD, "Half Broke Horses", I may have approached her subject matter backwards. Her storytelling is superior to the average novel in that she evokes emotions, especially disdain for the parents, in this story of her childhood. #4) This memoir is beautifully written and creates a clear view of the sad and neglected life of the author and her siblings. While you can't help feeling shocked at the way the Walls parents raised their family, it is also easy to hear the author's loyalty toward her parents and their unique gifts. #5) Glass Castle is intricantely woven from childhood to present. Some conflicts are so different, yet others all of us can relate to and understand. #6) This is a true story. What a horrible life the author and her siblings had with a drunk father and lightweight for a mother who filled their heads with fallacies and often could not even afford Christmas gifts, so they were taken out and told to pick a star out of the sky. Gross parental neglect is rampant; the book opens with the author at age 3, cooking hot dogs on a gas stove, and her dress catches fire; WHERE WAS MOM???? The whole book is filled with this sort of garbage. Also, the narrator has a flat, whiny voice which is very irritating. #7) A really amazing memoir about a girl with absent and irresponsible parents. #8) This book is hard to put into words, it would have to be my favorite of all time. After reading the first page, you'll be hooked. Jeannettes unconditional love for her parents is truely amazing. Especially since most of the time, they werent able to put food on the table and were often too caught up in their own hopes and dreams to notice their childrens need. Jeannette and her siblings upbringing was really a fight for survival and her story is one I will never forget. #9) I love the life the Walls family lives; its fascinating and refreshing to meet a family with a (sometimes) heroic father who can help you pet a cheetah at the zoo. However, I was extremely frustrated with this lifestyle when the children were forced to be parents to their mother and father because their "adventurous lifestyle" was usually an excuse to be selfish and lazy. Still a great book to read, I wouldnt discourage reading it.
