Summary |
In this gently absurdist comedy, Gonzalo Tamayo finds himself navigating the baffling bureaucracy of the Catholic Church when he attempts to formally renounce his faith. Tomayo soon discovers that leaving the church is much easier said than done. This coming-of-age satire is told with a gentle nod to the Cohen Brothers' sensibility. The Apostate touches meaningfully on the crisis within the Catholic Church; a crisis that centers on the conflict between tradition and modernity.. Winner of the FIPRESCI Prize and Nominated for Best Film at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. Nominated for the Critics Award at the Hamburg Film Festival.. "[THE APOSTATE] has an engaging prickliness as a satiric peek into the life of a brooding idealist." - Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times. "This Spanish-Uruguayan satire about a man struggling to leave his Catholic church in Madrid offers a wry absurdist take on existential crisis without resorting to cliche." - Leah Pickett, Chicago Reader |
