Summary The Odyssey is an epic poem, attributed to Homer, and is one of the oldest pieces of western literature. Scholars believe it was written at the end of the 8th century BC. The poem follows the Greek hero Odysseus, as he journeys home after the ten-year long Trojan War. His journey home comprises another ten years, wherein Odysseus encounters many obstacles including adverse weather, mythical beasts, and angry gods. Many scholars agree the Odyssey was originally composed and shared orally. This edition is the verse-translation of Alexander Pope dating to 1726.
