Sara Pennypacker, author of the “Clementine” Series, presents a gripping story about how two eleven-year-old girls, as different as night and day; learn to get along following the natural death of their elderly care-giver. Since both girls fear being put into the foster care system, they choose to respectfully bury the body themselves, keeping their secret safe, as they learn to live on their own. While the premise of the story may seem outlandish, unrealistic or down-right dreadful, the author masterfully and eloquently keeps the reader focused on the central themes of friendship, family, hope, forgiveness, and self-reliance. Because of the subject matter presented, the recommended age range of the reader audience is 10 - 15 years old. pm
