SRP 2010 REVIEW: My favorite book of all time. Everyone has heard of 1984, the dystopian, oppressive society in which all freedom is ruthless crushed. Fewer have heard of Brave New World, which takes a much different approach. In BNW, society is kept stable (oppressed one might say) by pleasure. The government placates its citizens with drugs, sex, and pre-natal conditioning that make them youthful, happy, and occupied all the time. With all the basics needs of life met, there is no need for much freedom, disagreement, or even art. By the time I finished the book, I had really reconsidered what the merits of 'freedom' were and what the meaning of 'utopia' was. I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in politics, philosophy, or science (as it is a work of science fiction to a large extent).
