Summary Narrator Jack and his mother, who was kidnapped seven years earlier when she was a 19-year-old college student, celebrate his fifth birthday. They live in a tiny, 11-foot-square soundproofed cell in a converted shed in the kidnapper's yard. The sociopath, whom Jack has dubbed Old Nick, visits at night, grudgingly doling out food and supplies. But Ma, as Jack calls her, proves to be resilient and resourceful--and attempts a nail-biting escape.

SRP 2012 REVIEW: I was not a captured by this book as others seem to be, but it was very interesting to read. I liked the perspective of the 5-year-old narrator, as I have a young son and it was fun to read through his eyes.

SRP 2012 REVIEW: Remarkable. Five year old Jack narrates his days with his mother in the place he calls "Room". She has spent all of Jack's life trying to protect him from the man who has held her as a prisoner for seven years. She reveals to Jack that the world he has only seen on television is not a remote fantasy and plans their escape from the only world he has known.

SRP 2011 REVIEW: Very well done and moving. The narrator is a 5 year old boy who has never been out of the room in which he and his mother are being held prisoner by an abductor. When they finally escape, he has to learn about all the reality he didn't know existed.

SRP 2011 REVIEW: Outstanding Book! It is about a girl who is kidnapped and locked in a shed for years and gives birth. The book is divided into two parts. Life in captivity and life after they escape. Great book for a Book Club.

SRP 2011 REVIEW: Written in the voice of Jack, a five-year old boy, this disturbing story concerns kidnapping and imprisonment. Jack and Ma have lived in an 11 X 11 room -- victims of a man they call Old Nick. Childhood has a language of its own and it takes a while to get into some of what Jack is talking about but, when you do, it's an unforgettable place.
