SRP 2013 REVIEW: Just ok for me. I found the characters, with the exception of Helen, to be unappealing and unsympathetic. I was expecting a more thorough exploration of the careless prank, interpreted as a hate crime, that set the plot in motion. Rather than spending as much time with the tedious Jim and Bobby, I wanted to know more about Susan's son and ex-husband. Yawn.

SRP 2013 REVIEW: This is the newest book of Pulitzer Prize winning author Elizabeth Strout, and she returns to Shirley Falls as the setting for this wonderfully told story of a flawed family whose relationships are marked by an accident early in their childhood.
