The story follows three intertwined lives - one an orphaned apprentice, one a maid working hard to support her whole family, and the third a street musician with a harsh master. There is magic at work in the story with a Magical violin, a Clockwork man capable of independent action, a fortune teller who speaks to the dead, and clues to a long hidden treasure. The three strangers become friends and prove that friendship can solve problems that can’t be solved alone. The richly imagined world and interplay between the three protagonists makes this an outstanding tale. Grades 5 and Up. ab

SRP 2013 REVIEW: This adventurous, mysterious and intricate book ticks like clockwork, telling the strange stories of Giuseppe, Fredrick and Hannah who each have their own troubles and woes that they must overcome. Even though at the beginning they know nothing of each others lives, they are connected in more ways than one could imagine. I loved the thrilling mix of an old-fashioned world tumbling with strange, invisible magic. I could also connect to the story with key objects like the green violin and the clockwork man (which reminded me of Hugo Cabaret). It contained most of my favorite genres and it kept me turning the pages each time. I highly recommend this book! I come back to it all the time now, and it sweeps me into the wonderful world Matthew J. Kirby has created!

SRP 2011 REVIEW: I liked how three kids who at first didn't know anything about each other at the end, found out the key to their succes was each other. All of them had sad stories, but at the end Giuseppe, Fredrick, and Hannah ended up helping each other and solve there many problems. I loved how there lives were dangerous and intriguiging.
