SRP 2011 REVIEW: Ken Follett is probably best known for his World War II thrillers, but this book and its predecessor (The Pillars of the Earth) are set in medieval England. They are quite different from the more modern thrillers in some ways, but like them in other ways. Both have smart/handsome/beautiful protagonists, and truly evil villains to make life difficult, but the heroes generally triumph in the end. There are characters from variety of different social classes (peasants, merchants, knights, nobles, clerics, etc.) and the books gives a fascinating picture of the life of all of them in the 14th century. Follett manages to place his characters so they can experience first hand some world-changing events like the Battle of Crecy and the Black Plague. I thought it was amusing that this book, set in the time of Knights, was the first one I read for the summer reading program: A Midsummer *Knights* Read!
