Summary This latest volume in the Guides to Historic Events in America series provides a readily absorbable reference guide to Cold War events. It includes six chapters covering subjects such as origins of the Cold War, McCarthyism, key roles of Eisenhower and Kennedy, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam, Détente and Watergate. The volume begins with a 13 page chronology of events, from 1917 to 1992, when George H.W. Bush delivered a State of the Union address that thanked the US taxpayer for providing the burden of the resources to oppose the Soviet Union. The last 161 pages include short biographies of 19 key players, such as George Marshall and Henry Kissinger, along with 20 primary documents and an annotated bibliography. Twenty photographs are included, depicting events such as the arrival of the "Hollywood Ten" at the U.S. District Court in Washington, DC in 1948 and a close-up of Mao Zedong at his house in Beijing welcoming a visiting Richard Nixon.
