SRP 2013 REVIEW: It is as if the Hunger Games was stuffed with more guns and bullets. Very deadly and very cool.

SRP 2013 REVIEW: The future is pretty bleak. Aliens have invaded, and most of the human population has been killed in the 4 waves of attacks. Humans are at a huge disadvantage as they still have no idea what the aliens look like, or what their next move will be. Cassie, the main character, is a 16-year-old survivor trying to reunite with her younger brother Sam. She is alternately determined, courageous, self-pitying, frightened, desperate, and completely despairing, which seems pretty realistic for a traumatized survivor on her own. I really liked that, while we follow Cassie's story, we also get to see through the eyes of other survivors and begin to understand the 5th wave of attacks. The only part of the story that seemed unbelievable to me was the relationship between Cassie and Evan. While it's not quite the ridiculous insta-love that you see in many books written for teens, I thought it didn't quite ring true to Cassie's character as we see her in the beginning of the book, and it makes a weird pause in the middle of an otherwise taught, action-packed, seriously what plausible-and-terrifying-alien-stuff-will-happen-next story. That being said, I will totally read the next book to see what happens next for Cassie and the other survivors, and cross my fingers that the author focuses more on the "trying not to die at the hands of the aliens" aspect, rather than the relationships between Cassie, Evan, Ringer, and Ben. Because seriously, who has time for a love quadrangle when you are trying to outrun the 5th Wave?

SRP 2013 REVIEW: Unique, action-packed apocalyptic tale told from various viewpoints. Each narrator is so full of life; you carry the burdens of their pasts, their losses, their sacrifices, their shame. There's Cassie, her brother, the guardian, the lover, the enemy, the fighter, and the teddy bear that is hope and courage and humanity all bundled into one raggedy stuffed animal. And together, they tell the tale of humanity - how the apocalypse is about more than finding the will to survive, but it's about holding on to what's worth living for, and it's about fighting for what's worth dying for. And in the end it's not about letting your animal instincts kick in, but it's the human nature that wins out.
