SRP 2011 REVIEW: The stories in this book are heart wrenching. It tells the stories of several Chinese women, as told to the author over the past 20 years or so. The writing is somewhat awkward--I attribute that to its translation from Chinese to English. It helps provide insight into the cultural norms on mainland China, especially regarding relationships between men and women, family dynamics, and views on the role of the government and higher education. It left me thankful that as a woman, I have much more freedom than the women in the stories.
