Summary Unable to conceive a child, Jean and Henry Farrell decide to adopt. Emma, a pregnant woman looking to give up her baby, approves of the couple and makes a deal with them. However, the baby is born hydrocephalic and will not live long. Although the agreement was conditional on the health of the baby, Jean finds it difficult to give the child up, straining her marriage to a breaking point.
