Marie Antoinette X
April 23 2011
This is a spunky, punky take on the life of the bold young monarch, as imagined by director Sofia Coppola. This film plays fast and loose with history, yet it still manages to capture the dissipation and wildness that were ultimately the undoing of the French court and brought their downfall at the hands of the French Revolutionaries. The look of this film is very fun: costumes are confections that bend the imagination (and yet some things remain true to history: the real Marie did wear a battleship in her hair to commemorate the victory of a French naval battle). In short, this is not a stuffy period drama. Enjoy it for what it is, but don’t write your next history class paper based on it, either!
