Summary Can the Firefighter-Chef and the Pet Vet stand the heat in the kitchen... Now that Dr. ZeLisa Tobias has survived an IED attack and a stint of homelessness, nothing will prevent her from achieving her goals (her "Three B's"). Then, the veterinarian makes a house call on Halloween night. Face to face with a man from her past, she must deal with his feelings of betrayal and, later, a series of rash misfortune that threatens her newfound stability. Firefighter Hank Streeter knows his call to the animal hospital is a mistake the instant he answers the door. The doctor has arrived. And—heartbreak is her name. Will deception, doubt, and a run of bad luck curse their accidental reunion? Or will Hank convince ZeLisa that a marriage of convenience is love's ultimate balm? Note: This is an intimately sweet, relationship-based, mainstream romance. Excerpt: Firefighters battled the blaze. They held the hose in a tandem line, struggling to control the water's force. Police contained the crowd. From her vantage point, she saw no fire on her end of the complex. She hatched a plan. ... Quickly, ZeLisa sneaked inside. A three-hundred-sixty-degree revolution revealed nothing. "I know I hear water in here." ... In a flash, conditions had deteriorated. The room no longer appeared hazy. A soupy fog collected to shroud her head and drifted toward the floor. ZeLisa coughed as she returned to the closet. Now tooted over, she searched the floor for shoes. The first pair her fingers touched was her leather boots. She slung them out over her head while stretching for the next pair. "Hey!" That Darth Vader pitch startled her. Before she turned around, a strong grip dragged her out of the closet—by her waist—and backward. ZeLisa inhaled and gulped a throat full of hot air. Her attempt to give a verbal attack ended, strangled. Air was in short supply. She choked. Overcome by a floating sensation, she rotated in mid-air, and landed belly first across a shoulder. Miraculously, the forceful blow cleared her air passage. She felt gloved fingers grasp her thigh. The pressure of an arm on her legs anchored her in place. Then, like a sack of potatoes, she was hauled through her very own home and out the front door. The crushing thud of each running step cut her breath. Taking all she could take, ZeLisa pounced. She wailed at her captor's back with her fist, aiming to maim. Unceremoniously dumped on her feet, she floundered for balance in the center of the gawking spectators. Back on the run, the battle-garbed firefighter with Darth Vader's voice spoke to her again. "I said to get home. Not go in." ZeLisa's recognition flared. "You." She ran after him. Her hand whipped out to grab his arm, detaining him. The facemask obscured part of his features. "I have to go, Zee." Hank backed away. "Please...stay here. I'll come back when we get things under control." ZeLisa heard the misery of his plea. Her ire fizzled. She let go and issued an appeal of her own. "Hank, be careful."
