Months before 2011's momentous uprising in Egypt many talked of a revolution - but no one knew when that day would come. Going behind the headlines, WE ARE EGYPT - filmed in the 14 months leading up to the Revolution - highlights the years of mounting resentment against the ruling regime. Deeply embedded inside the turmoil, filmmaker Lillie Paquette followed key opposition figures and young democracy activists as they struggled against extraordinary odds and at great personal risk to remove an uncompromising U.S. -backed authoritarian regime determined to stay in power. Includes 82 minutes of bonus features including Memories of Egypt's 1952 Revolution with Omar Sharif, Inside Mubarak's NDP Headquarters with Ali Eldin Hilal, Noam Chomsky on US foreign policy in Egypt, democracy activists Esraa Abdel Fattah and Basem Fathy after the Revolution, as well as segments featuring Michele Dunne of the Carnegie Endowment and Laith Kubba of the National Endowment for Democracy. We Are Egypt: The Story Behind The Revolution is the real story behind the story. Everybody saw the revolution unfold, but what people didn't see was the groundwork beforehand. Deeply embedded inside the turmoil, filmmaker Lillie Paquette followed key opposition figures and young democracy activists as they struggled against extraordinary odds and at great personal risk to remove an uncompromising U.S. -backed authoritarian regime determined to stay in power. The documentary became a personal journey for the filmmaker as she got to know these activists. She saw them in and out of jail and through their emotional ups and downs; and throughout the entire year they said they weren't giving up or backing down. What happened during the uprising was not something new: people had been chipping away at the government's oppression and many activists talked about an uprising before the revolution actually happened. People said they were optimistic about the upcoming year and said they hoped to see a great deal of change. The film ends with a conversation between the filmmaker and one of the main characters in the film immediately after Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak actually stepped down - the excitement in his voice is electric. The film has been screened, in some cases multiple times, at various universities including George Washington, NYU, Columbia, Harvard, Northeastern, Tufts, Yale, Stanford, Virginia Tech, UMASS Lowell, Georgetown and Holy Cross. It has also been screened at various community centers and at the 2011 Boston Palestine Film Festival. |
