Summary 1776 is a delightful musical celebration of the founding of The United States of America. The story centers around the familiar historical characters as they organize a movement for independence from Mother England. All events lead up to that most significant date, July 4, 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was signed. This is the DVD "restored" version which runs ca. 166 minutes -- longer than the theatrical release cut, yet shorter than the laserdisc "restored" version.

Delightful and Informative X

When was the last time you enjoyed Revolutionary War era history, even if you aren't a history buff? The casting in this musical is spot-on. I found myself liking John Adams despite his obnoxious personality; Ben Franklin was positively charming; Thomas Jefferson and his bride were endearing and well captured; and in whole the story was very engaging. From a critically musical perspective, the music was nothing special but the dialogue was so witty that it made up for the musical lack. In short, our entire family laughed all the way through it while learning some mostly accurate history. I would gladly watch it again - and will!
