Raine’s mother suddenly packs her up and away from her city home in Milwaukee to spend summer at a country estate and artists’ retreat called Sparrow Road. In the past the grand estate was used as an orphanage. Raine wonders about the orphans who lived there and in quiet moments imagines or hears answers from one of them. For Raine, the bigger mystery is why her mother has suddenly moved them to the country and how she might be connected to the quiet and cold caretaker of the estate. The story is a great mix of family secrets, a magical place with a dark history, eccentric characters, and whispers of past lives. Grades 5 – 8. ab
