Summary All of us face challenges in our lives: financial crises, the loss of loved ones, raising children. But those are all mere bumps in the road compared to what Yorli Huff has faced in her life. She was born to an absentee father and a mother who was ill prepared to be a parent. Before the age of twelve, she had already suffered sexual, physical, and emotional abuse -- much of it at the hands of her family. As a young woman with no parental guidance about relationships or sex, she had two abortions, and a husband who tried to kill her. Any one of those experiences would have defeated most of us. But Yorli Huff was given a special gift at birth: she was born "in the caul." When a baby is born in the caul, the amniotic sac is still intact around the body. Legend has it that being born in the caul, or "within the veil," is a sign of good luck for the baby, an omen that that child is not only divinely protected, but destined for greatness. There is no more proof of this than what Yorli Huff has become. While working three jobs, carind for her aging grandparents, one of whom was bedridden, and, eventually, her premature child, Yorli managed to become one of the few African-American undercover agents in the Cook County Sheriff's Police Department, a Metropolitan drug task force. But her rise to the top brought with it racism and discrimination, and Yorli Huff made history when she filed a lawsuit against the Cook County Sheriff's Police Department, a battle which took her eleven years to win. Eye-opening and inspirational, The Veil of Victory shows the triumph of the human spirit over seemingly insurmountable difficulties. It is a must-read for anyone who has had to deal with problems that threatened to overwhelm them, and for all of us who must remember to be grateful for the gifts we've been given.
