Summary Equal parts Clint Eastwood and Mae West, Margaret "Peggy" Thomas is a hard-drinking, wizened, witty old woman who has to hop a train out to the end of the line to attend the trial for one of the murderers of her dead sheriff husband, James. And as she does many things in her life, Peggy sets off alone, with just her horse and her dog to keep her company. That doesn't last. Margaret is soon joined by Gina, a free-spirited wanderer, and then by an enterprising moonshiner, the short of stature and aptly named Bantam. On the way to the trial, the three encounter a variety of dangers, from a place called the Pena de Muerte, to the gang that killed James. And although Margaret's adventures can at times feel lighthearted (especially her encounters with the raunchier side of human nature), there is the ever-present specter of the end of the line.
