Until "Nana," about the life of a prostitute, becomes a smash hit and turns Zola into a celebrity, champion of the people. As he churns out a string of similar books that make him quite rich, his old friend Paul Cezanne tells him "An artist should remain poor." His determined intervention in the Dreyfus Affair, at the request of Dreyfus's wife Lucie, results in "J'accuse!" his famous denunciation of the Army, and leads to a conviction for libel. He flees to England, where he remains until granted amnesty. Unfortunately, he dies before the news that Dreyfus was exonerated and reinstated to full rank can reach him. Indicative of the mores of its time, during the course of this clear story about institutionalized anti- Semitism, the word "Jew" is never mentioned. And while most Hollywood biographies must be taken with a grain--if not a handful--of salt, the film makes a reasonable effort at accuracy and completeness. 521 8 MPAA Rating: Not rated; Canadian Home Video Rating: Rated G. 538 Blu-ray; 1080p HD 16x9 1.37:1 ; Dolby Digital mono. 546 In English ; English subtitled for the deaf and hard of hearing. 586 Academy Award winner, 1937: Best Picture (Warner Bros.) ; Best Writing, Screenplay (Norman Reilly Raine, Heinz Herald, Geza Herczeg) ; Academy Awards for Best Writing, Screenplay--Heinz Herald, Geza Herczeg, Norman Reilly Raine; Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Joseph Schildkraut) 600 10 Zola, Émile,|d1840-1902|vDrama. 600 10 Dreyfus, Alfred,|d1859-1935|vTrials, litigation, etc. |vDrama. 600 10 Cézanne, Paul,|d1839-1906|vDrama. 610 10 France.|bArmée|xHistory|y19th century|vDrama|vVideodiscs. 650 0 Authors|vDrama|vVideodiscs. 650 0 Novelists, French|y19th century|vDrama|vVideodiscs. 650 0 Men|xConduct of life|vDrama|vVideodiscs. 650 0 Man-woman relationships|vDrama|vVideodiscs. 650 0 Trials (Treason)|zFrance|vVideodiscs. 650 0 Scandals|xPolitical aspects|zFrance|vDrama|vVideodiscs. 650 0 Politics and literature|zFrance|vDrama|vVideodiscs. 650 0 Antisemitism|zFrance|vDrama|vVideodiscs. 651 0 France|xIntellectual life|y19th century|vDrama |vVideodiscs. 651 0 France|xPolitics and government|y19th century|vDrama |vVideodiscs. 651 0 London (England)|vDrama|vVideodiscs. 651 0 Paris (France)|vDrama|vVideodiscs. 655 7 Video recordings for the hearing impaired.|2lcgft 655 7 Feature films.|2lcgft 655 7 Biographical films.|2lcgft 655 7 Video recordings.|2lcgft 655 7 Drama.|2lcgft 655 7 Blu-ray discs.|2local 700 1 Dieterle, William,|d1893-1972,|efilm director. 700 1 Raine, Norman Reilly,|d1895-1971,|escreenwriter. 700 1 Herald, Heinz,|escreenwriter,|eadapter. 700 1 Herczeg, Géza,|d1888-1954,|escreenwriter,|eadapter. 700 1 Muni, Paul,|d1895-1967,|eactor. 700 1 Schildkraut, Joseph,|d1895-1964,|eactor. 700 1 Sondergaard, Gale,|d1899-1985,|eactor. 700 1 Crisp, Donald,|d1880-1974,|eactor. 700 1 Holden, Gloria,|d1908-1991,|eactor. 700 1 O'Brien-Moore, Erin,|d1902-1979,|eactor. 700 1 O'Neill, Henry,|d1891-1961,|eactor. 700 1 Carnovsky, Morris,|eactor. 700 1 Calhern, Louis,|d1895-1956,|eactor. 700 1 Litel, John,|d1892-1972,|eactor. 700 1 Morgan, Ralph,|d1883-1956,|eactor. 700 1 Barrat, Robert,|d1889-1970,|eactor. 700 1 Sokoloff, Vladimir,|d1889-1962,|eactor. 700 1 Davenport, Harry,|d1866-1949,|eactor. 700 1 Warwick, Robert,|d1878-1964,|eactor. 700 1 Richman, Charles,|d1870-1940,|eactor. 700 1 Emery, Gilbert,|d1875-1945,|eactor. 700 1 Kingsford, Walter,|d1881-1958,|eactor. 700 1 Everton, Paul,|d1868-1948,|eactor. 700 1 Love, Montagu,|d1877-1943,|eactor. 700 1 Sheridan, Frank,|d1869-1943,|eactor. 700 1 Hare, Lumsden,|d1875-1964,|eactor. 700 1 Jones, Marcia Mae,|eactor. 700 1 Roberts, Florence,|d1861-1940,|eactor. 700 1 Moore, Dick,|d1925-2015,|eactor. 700 1 Steiner, Max,|d1888-1971,|ecomposer (expression) 700 1 |iMotion picture adaptation of (work):|aJosephson, Matthew, |d1899-1978.|tZola and his time. 710 2 Warner Bros.
