Summary |
This Academy-award nominated documentary features real footage from the United States Marine Corps and shows the bombardment of the island of Iwo Jima during the Allied advance on Japan. This film was one of the first to feature footage in color of war-time battles. It captures the moment that was made famous by Joe Rosenthal's photograph in which five Marines and a Navy corpsman raised a giant U.S. flag atop the five-hundred-and-fifty-foot-high Mt. Suribachi. |
