After WWII in Russia, Germans are reviled and their dogs, German shepherds, are shot in the street. All kinds of dogs have been used by the military in the war effort and very few dogs are left. When Mikhail finds a German shepherd with a dying man, he wants to keep the dog but it is dangerous to own one. He may be seen as a traitor by neighbors and there are hardened thieves who steal dogs to sell. Mikhail and his younger sister devise ways to keep the dog, Zasha, secret and safe. With nosy neighbors and a new dog breeder in the area, the threat of discovery grows daily. Historical details combined with the love of a special dog make a good combination. Grade 4 – 6. ab
