Summary Hundreds of biographies have been written about America's first President, but three stand out as the best: Parson Weems (c.1800) where surfaced the story of the cherry tree, Douglas S. Freeman's multi-volume tome which details Washington's life almost to the day, and John Alden's single-volume work published in 1984. Ambitious in scope, Alden's sweeping account chronicles the ideas, events, and personalties that surrounded Washington, from his younger years in Virginia to his heroic days in battle and eventually through his presidency and famed farewell address. Alden mixes a wealth of information with enlivened and interesting tidbits and anecdotes.
