Summary |
The Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad 1,400 years ago. It is the supreme authority in Islam and the source of all Islamic teaching; it is a sacred text and a book of guidance that sets out the creed, rituals, ethics, and laws of the Islamic religion. It has been one of the most influential books in the history of literature. Recognized as the greatest literary masterpiece in Arabic, it has nevertheless remained difficult to understand in its English translations. Originally produced in 1930, this translation of the Holy Qur'an received wide acclaim and respect for being the first translation of the Qur'an into English by Native English Muslim, Marmaduke Pickthall. His translation of the Qur'an is one of the most widely known and used in the English-speaking world. A convert from Christianity, Pickthall was a novelist, esteemed by D. H. Lawrence, H. G. Wells, and E. M. Forster, as well as a journalist, headmaster, and political and religious leader. He declared his conversion to Islam in dramatic fashion after delivering a talk on "Islam and Progress" on November 29, 1917, to the Muslim Literary Society in Notting Hill, West London. Note: This production includes the Arabic recitation followed by the translation in English language. |
